Luers Addresses New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists

New Jersey lawmakers proposed a so-called reform bill that will essentially gut the Open Public Records Act (OPRA), a law that has helped keep New Jersey government honest for over two decades. Journalists and the public have used OPRA to reveal some of the state's biggest stories, shedding light on corruption, fraud, waste and abuses of power.

Now that OPRA is under attack, who will defend it? The New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists has assembled a panel of experts to discuss flaws of the bill working its way through the Legislature and provide meaningful solutions for improving access to public records in the Garden State without defanging the current law.

Cohn Lifland's Walter Luers will be on the panel of "Defending OPRA," April 30 at Rider University's Rebovich Institute.

What You Need to Know About the New Jersey Flood Risk Notification Law

Partner Mercedes Diego published an article, "What You Need to Know About the New Jersey Flood Risk Notification Law," in the April 22, 2024 issue of The New Jersey Law Journal.

In the article, Ms. Diego said, "If you live of work in New Jersey, there is no debate that flooding is on the rise. It seems that we can't go more than a week before learning of another upcoming storm for which we must prepare. As a direct response to these increased flooding risks, New Jersey enacted a Flood Risk Notification Law that went into effect on March 20, 2024. The Law imposes strict requirements for landlords and sellers of real estate in the State."  To read the article, click here.
