Matthew Gately practices primarily in the areas of complex commercial, class action and criminal litigation. He has represented clients in civil and criminal matters in federal and state courts, at both the trial and appellate levels.  Mr. Gately’s experience in civil cases includes supervising all aspects of discovery, briefing and arguing dispositive and non-dispositive motions, and trying cases in court and arbitration. In criminal cases, Mr. Gately has handled proffer sessions, plea and non-prosecution negotiations, and sentencing arguments.

Mr. Gately is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell (highest level of professional excellence as determined by peers) and was invited to become the second Associate Fellow of Litigation Counsel of America in New Jersey.  He has been named a “New Leader of the Bar” by the New Jersey Law Journal, a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers, and a “Top Lawyer” for Litigation, Commercial Litigation and White Collar Criminal Defense by (201) Magazine.

Prior to joining Cohn Lifland, Mr. Gately was senior law clerk to the Hon. Madeline Cox Arleo, U.S.D.J., D.N.J., law clerk to the Hon. Michael A. Hammer, U.S.M.J., D.N.J., and worked for several years in the commercial litigation group of an AmLaw 100 law firm.

Mr. Gately graduated from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and member of the Columbia Business Law Review.  He received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Lafayette College.

Mr. Gately is co-chair of the Federal Practice Committee of the Bergen County Bar Association.  He is also a member of the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey, the Historical Society for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the New Jersey State Bar Association (and its Federal Practice & Procedure Section), and the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey.  Additionally, he is a Barrister of the C. Willard Heckel Inn of Court and 4th Degree Knight of Columbus.
